John B. Simpson - "Where Life Works" Brand Ambassador

“Buffalo Niagara brings together the best of many worlds, combining the educational, cultural, and social resources one could expect to find in a much larger city with the community feeling of a much smaller town.  It’s a community that treasures its past and is planning boldly for the future.  That’s why my life works here, and that’s why I’m proud to be part of the future of this community and its hometown university.”
-John B. Simpson, President of the University at Buffalo

John B. Simpson, president of the University at Buffalo, assumed his position at UB on January 1, 2004, bringing with him thirty years of experience in higher education. A native of California, he now calls Buffalo, NY home.

Dr. Simpson is an accomplished research scientist specializing in neuroendocrinology, physiology, and behavior. He received his master's and doctoral degrees in neurobiology and behavior from Northwestern University.

One of Dr. Simpson’s initiatives is "UB Believers," a group of individuals who recognize the positive impact of UB on its communities, and who are dedicated to raising awareness of its value among elected officials and other policy makers.

Along with Dr. Simpson’s lead, what is guiding UB’s excitement and change is UB 2020, a plan for becoming one of the top public research universities in the country. Chief among Dr. Simpson's priorities upon assuming the UB presidency has been the institution of a clear and strong plan for the university's advancement as a great public research university for the twenty-first century.

Part of the plan calls for UB to increase its presence in Downtown Buffalo and increase connections with the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (BNMC). This plan is already progressing with the recent purchase of a building on the BNMC. UB is now in the process of transforming the site into the UB Downtown Gateway, a literal and figurative doorway connecting the University and the city. UB soon will have six buildings in the Downtown core.

Dr. Simpson is an active supporter of the arts, he is a member of the board of directors of the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy-the governing body of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery-and a former trustee of the Pilchuck Glass School. Dr. Simpson also sits on the Buffalo Niagara Partnership board of directors. Buffalo Niagara Enterprise works closely with UB and Dr. Simpson to continue to make Buffalo a thriving and growing region.
