In 1970, American mathematician Dr. Herbert A. Hauptman, a native of New York City, made Buffalo, NY his home when he joined the crystallographic group of the Medical Foundation of Buffalo, now the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute (HWI). Dr. Hauptman pioneered and developed a mathematical method that has revolutionized the field of X-ray crystallography and was the catalyst for a new era in basic biomedical research in the determination of the three-dimensional molecular structures of medicinally-important proteins and enzymes. Today, Dr. Hauptman's direct methods, which he has continued to improve and refine, are routinely used in solving structures in the life-altering research. In 1985, he won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, becoming the first non-chemist to win in that category.

In 2005, Hauptman-Woodward constructed a new, world-class research center on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. The Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute (HWI) is an independent, not-for-profit, biomedical research facility located in the heart of downtown Buffalo's medical campus. Working under the leadership of Dr. Hauptman, HWI scientists use the techniques of molecular biology, biochemistry, and X-ray crystallography to determine the structures of important molecules, such as proteins, that play a role in the development of specific diseases.

The Buffalo Niagara region has a thriving life sciences sector and is recognized as a leader in this key cluster for cutting-edge innovation, technology, and existing research centers. With more than 130 life sciences companies, nearly $300 million in investments and more than $2 billion in funding, it is clear that the Buffalo-Niagara region is dedicated to the growth and support of the life sciences industry. Buffalo Niagara Enterprise’s role is to attract, grow, and startup new life sciences companies in the region by assisting them in finding the key resources, people, and assets they need to be successful.
