And Buffalo Niagara has been leading the way for years with new innovations, treatments, and research. The internal cardiac pacemaker, first cancer research and treatment center, PSA test, and beta interferon treatment for M.S. all started here.The heart of the region’s life sciences industry, the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (BNMC) in downtown Buffalo, has seen more than $300 million in public and private funding. BNMC is a consortium of the region's premier clinical care, research and medical institutions, including the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, the New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences, University at Buffalo and Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute. Life Sciences works in Buffalo Niagara! These eminent institutions are the nucleus for the many life sciences companies in Buffalo Niagara – over 130 companies, and growing. The ranks of our life sciences workforce grow each year, with the 6,500 current members, often joined by life sciences graduates coming out of one of our 30 institutions of higher education. With 100,000 enrolled students, these institutions grant 1,000 life sciences degrees annually. In a recent national report, Buffalo Niagara ranked 4th in the nation in terms of the number of science and engineering degrees per capita granted each year. Within a 90-mile radius of Buffalo there are approximately 650 medical industry companies and research institutions, including such established companies as AstraZeneca Canada, MDS Proteomics, Baxter Corporation, Amgen Canada, GlaxoSmithKline, and Pfizer Global. All this combines to make Buffalo Niagara a center for molecular medicine, oncology, medical devices, drug discovery and development, and bioinformatics. The UB Technology Incubator, located in the Baird Research Park, supports the creation of new technology-based businesses by providing affordable business services to entrepreneurs.
