Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus Named Program of the Year by Northeastern Economic Developers Association

August 21, 2007 (BUFFALO, NY) – The Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus has been named “Program of the Year” by the Northeastern Economic Developers Association (NEDA). This is one of three awards given annually by NEDA in recognition of the very best economic development achievements in the eleven Northeastern states. The 2007 Program of the Year award will be presented before an audience of economic development leaders from throughout the Northeast at NEDA’s 51st Annual Conference in Atlantic City on October 1, 2007.

In its announcement, NEDA commended the BNMC as a targeted business development program where a wealth of biomedical resources come together to attract world-class research talent.

“The Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus has played a significant role in the revitalization of the City of Buffalo over the past several years. Recognition from NEDA shines a light on the progress made by the city as a whole and shows developers across the country that Buffalo is a great location for growth and investment,” said Buffalo Mayor Byron W. Brown. “I commend the leadership of the Campus for developing and implementing this successful program.”

“It is an honor to have this major initiative in New York State recognized as NEDA’s Program of the Year,” said Daniel Gunderson, Chairman of the Upstate Empire State Development Corporation. “The BNMC’s member institutions, the City of Buffalo, and the surrounding neighborhoods have worked tirelessly over the past several years and deserve to be acknowledged for their collaboration and dedication to creating this world-class campus and neighborhood in Buffalo.”

“National recognition for this well-planned and executed program from an organization such as NEDA shows the rest of the country what we already know - Buffalo is a thriving and diverse place to live, work, and play,” said Matthew K. Enstice, Executive Director of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. “Receiving this award from NEDA is truly a credit to the top clinical, research, and academic institutions that are vital to this partnership.”

“The BNMC is an excellent example of what well-placed investments and collaboration can do for a community,” said Brian Anderson, Senior Economic Developer of National Grid, which nominated the BNMC for the award, and member of NEDA’s Board of Directors. “National Grid is proud to have invested in the medical campus and will continue to do so in the future.”

“The BNMC has done an extraordinary job of making the community an integral part of its planning and implementation process,” said Rev. Michael Chapman of Saint John Baptist Church. “As a Fruit Belt resident and church leader, I am proud to congratulate the BNMC - recognizing the BNMC as Program of the Year means recognition for all of us.”

The Northeastern Economic Developers Association (NEDA) was formed in 1956 to promote economic and industrial development in the Northeastern region of the United States. The members of NEDA represent a wide variety of disciplines including economic development, banking, real-estate brokerage, law, engineering, and environmental consulting. NEDA’s 52nd Annual Conference will be held on September 21 – 23rd, 2008, in Buffalo, New York.

Past recipients of NEDA’s Program of the Year award are QuickTracts (Connecticut), the New Jersey Business Employment Incentive Program, InternHere.com (Connecticut and Massachusetts), and Pittsburgh Knows Chemistry (Pennsylvania).

BNMC, a 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2001 by key health care and research institutions, the City of Buffalo, and neighborhood stakeholders, serves as the single entity charged with collaboratively planning and implementing projects and programs for the medical campus. Its functions include: promoting the clinical, research, and academic excellence of its member institutions; coordinating, improving, and increasing current campus infrastructure; advancing economic development and entrepreneurial opportunities; and supporting the Allentown and Fruit Belt neighborhoods adjacent to the medical campus.

More than 8,000 people come to work at the medical campus every day. Together, the BNMC institutions host over 760,000 patient visits annually, and account for approximately $1.5 billion in economic impact each year. It consists of more than 3.5 million square feet of research, clinical, and support space.

The BNMC is dedicated to the cultivation of a world-class medical campus for clinical care, research, education, and entrepreneurship on 100 acres in downtown Buffalo. It is home to the region’s top clinical, research, and medical education institutions, including: University at Buffalo, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Olmsted Center for the Visually Impaired, Kaleida Health, Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute, Buffalo Medical Group, Buffalo Hearing & Speech Center, and Upstate New York Transplant Services.
