LEED is a green building rating system that is gaining popularity among designers and building owners alike. The United States Green Building Council (USGBC), who developed LEED in 1999, is a non-profit organization based out of Washington D.C. that is trying to make sustainability an industry standard.
LEED is a point based system that consists of 69 possible points and has 7 prerequisites that are required to achieve certification. These prerequisites range from environmental tobacco smoke control to operation recycling programs. The points, which are available by achieving LEED credits are divided into six categories including Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality and Innovation in Design.
