Roswell files plans for larger, $43M center

Plans by Roswell Park Cancer Institute   to build a new clinical sciences facility took a step forward this week.

The downtown hospital filed plans Dec. 16 with the state Department of Health for an 11-story, $43 million Clinical Sciences Center, to be built adjacent to the existing facility at the corner of Carlton and Michigan streets on the eastern border of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus    .

When the project was initially announced in early 2010, plans called for an eight-story, $40 million project with ambulatory patient space, offices and consultation space. This summer, Roswell said the project had been expanded to a 10-story, 123,500-square-foot facility.

Hospital officials have said the center will link together Roswell’s existing ambulatory care center with its Grace Cancer Drug Center, improving physician scientist access to patients and laboratory work.

Funding for the facility includes more than $32 million raised through the Making Room to Save Lives capital campaign, as well as a commitment of $10 million from the RPCI Corp.

Plans call for housing several programs at the site: Chemotherapy Infusion Clinic; breast center and mammography screening; education, survivorship and special population needs; and expansion of additional clinics and services.

The certificate-of-need application filed with the state requires the approval of the Public Health and Health Planning Council within the DOH, as well as city planners.

Groundbreaking is expected sometime in 2012.
