Long-Term Care Facility Gets a Name: HighPointe on Michigan

HighPointe on Michigan, currently under construction on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, will open in December.  The project, planned for the block of Michigan Avenue and Maple, East North and High streets, will be the first urban nursing home built in Buffalo in decades.

 "HighPointe on Michigan is a warm and welcoming name that represents the geography as well as the elevation of our home," said Maureen Caruana, Kaleida Health's vice president for long term care. "More importantly for the residents in our care, it defines a future with outstanding quality in a modern facility unlike any other in Buffalo."
Kaleida Health held an employee naming contest to help name the facility and was aided in the branding project by The Martin Group, a Buffalo advertising agency.

"HighPointe on Michigan will help us consolidate long term care operations onto the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus," said James R. Kaskie, President and CEO of Kaleida Health.  Rightsizing facilities, leveraging current infrastructure and building out new space when needed will better serve our patients today, tomorrow and into the future."

Kaskie added that Kaleida Health is making difficult, yet strategic decisions in these challenging times.  HighPointe on Michigan will replace two nursing homes operated by Kaleida Health -- the 242-bed Deaconess Center on Humboldt Parkway and the 75-bed skilled-nursing unit in Millard Fillmore Gates Circle Hospital.  Kaleida Health has also turned over operations of the Waterfront Health Care Center, a 160 bed facility, to a private operator. 

At four stories and 300 beds, HighPointe on Michigan will rank as one of the largest nursing homes in the region and will fill a gap in long-term-care services resulting from the closure in recent years of Grace Manor, Nazareth, St. Francis and other skilled nursing facilities in the city of Buffalo
