The unemployment rate for the Buffalo Niagara region dipped to 7.3 percent in August, running below that of New York state and the nation.

The state Department of Labor released updated monthly statistics Tuesday showing the jobless rate locally had fallen by more than a half point from August 2010 when the figure was 7.9 percent.

New York state’s unemployment rate last month was 7.7 percent, down from 8.3 percent a year ago. Nationally, the jobless rate was 9.1 percent in August compared to 9.5 percent the previous year.

In Erie County, the jobless rate was 7.2 percent and in Niagara County it was 7.7 percent.
