Congress Imposes Entrance Fee on Canadian Visitors to U.S.
Tuesday, October 25, 2011
Traveling from Canada to the United States is about to become more expensive.
Congress has stripped Canadians of a long-standing exemption from a U.S. entrance fee, according to the Toronto Globe and Mail.
That means Canadians will have to pay a $5.50 customs charge whenever they enter the United States by airplane or ship. Canada had been exempt from the fee since 1997.
"We did it because of the budget," said David Jacobson, the U.S. ambassador to Canada. "I wish we were not in the situation where things like this are necessary, but they are."
