The BATAVIA — The University at Buffalo Center for Advanced Biomedical and Bioengineering Technology has a satellite office in the Upstate Med & Tech Park across R. Stephen Hawley Drive from Genesee Community College.

UB CAT is one of 15 centers across New York State that supports university-industry collaboration in research, education and technology transfer, with a strong focus on helping state-based businesses gain a technological edge on their competition, according to the Genesee County Economic Development Center’s May newsletter.

The GCEDC owns the med-tech park and is headquartered there. UB CAT is located within the agency’s offices, said Rachael Millspaugh, GCEDC’s marketing and communications manager.

The CAT fosters creation of new life sciences companies and helps existing businesses expand through new or improved product lines by utilizing the research and development asset and expertise within the university, the newsletter says.

Projects supported by the UB center annually drive substantial economic development impact for the state, it says.

The center, it says, also provides support to private sector companies, including matching project funding, research and development expertise, facilities, equipment, supplies, business development consultation, work force development programming, and other outreach and networking opportunities.

CAT, which has office hours by appointment only, would be interested in meeting with companies within the life sciences spectrum, including biotechnology, biomedical informatics (creating of information on health care), diagnostics, medical devices, pharmaceuticals and research and development, the newsletter says.

Those with questions or that would like to apply for project funding can contact Marnie LaVigne, director of business development for CAT at (716) 881-8904 or lavigne@buffalo.edu. LaVigne announced intentions for the satellite office location at ground-breaking for the med-tech facility in 2009.

The building has 3,500 square feet of remaining space for life science, medical device type companies, according to Millspaugh.

It was designed with expansion in mind, she advised. There is also land available at the 34-acre park for a company to build its own building, she said.
