M&T Lauded With Small Biz Awards

By: Allissa Kline

M&T Bank has received 14 awards for small business banking — more than any other bank in the nation — as part of the 2011 Greenwich Excellence Awards for Small Business Banking released in January.

The Buffalo-headquartered institution (NYSE: MTB) collected 12 national honors and two regional wins following an annual survey by Greenwich Associates of Connecticut. The financial consulting firm conducted more than 13,500 interviews with businesses whose sales range from $1 million to $10 million, asking business leaders to evaluate the banks they use.

Specifically, M&T picked up awards in the following national categories:

• Overall satisfaction

• Overall satisfaction in personal banking

• Relationship manager performance

• Credit policy (response/terms and conditions)

• Credit policy (willingness to lend/pricing)

• Financial stability

• Branch satisfaction

• Overall satisfaction in treasury management

• Accuracy of operations in treasury management

• Customer service in treasury management

• Product capabilities in treasury management, and

• Sales specialist performance in treasury management.

Among banks in the Northeast, the bank was recognized for overall satisfaction and overall satisfaction in treasury management. Last year, it received awards in three national categories — credit policy, financial stability and overall satisfaction in treasury management.

M&T is not the only local recipient of the Greenwich Excellence Awards. First Niagara Bank scooped up six national awards – in overall satisfaction, relationship manager performance, branch satisfaction and overall satisfaction, accuracy of operations and product capabilities in treasury management – and two regional honors in overall satisfaction and overall satisfaction in treasury management. HSBC Bank USA N.A., whose local roots are tied to the now-defunct Marine Midland Bank, received an excellence award for international service.

KeyBank N.A. of Cleveland, in the midst of aggressively growing its Western New York presence, received two excellence awards from Greenwich Associates. BB&T Corp. of North Carolina received 12 awards, the second-highest among the nation’s 750-plus banks.
