— The nation’s first FDA-approved cancer treatment vaccine, Provenge (sipuleucel-T), is being offered for the first time in Western New York at Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI). The vaccine is designed for men with advanced prostate cancer who have limited treatment options and who meet eligibility requirements. “It’s the first time we are able to offer immunotherapy with an FDA-approved product,” says Roberto Pili, MD, Chief of the Genitourinary Section in RPCI’s Department of Medicine.

— New research at Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) with the goal of developing a drug that could stop the spread of breast cancer has received support from the Elsa U. Pardee Foundation through a $62,500 grant. Andrei Bakin, PhD, Assistant Professor of Oncology in the Department of Cancer Genetics at RPCI, will lead the research that seeks to better understand how a protein enzyme known as TAK1 can be manipulated to slow or stop the spread of breast cancer.

— Roswell Park Cancer Institute has created an Adolescents and Young Adults (AYA) with Cancer program to expand and enhance its treatment and services addressing the medical, social, psychological, cultural and educational needs of young adults facing cancer. The program will be funded by The Steadfast Foundation.

— The University at Buffalo will host two fairs for engineering majors – the Virtual Global Engineering Career Fair on Tuesday, March 1 and the On-Campus Global Engineering Career Fair on Friday, March 4. The former will take place entirely online, with students virtually "meeting" prospective employers. The latter, for master's and doctoral-level students, will stick to a traditional format and so far involves 15 companies. Both fairs will include domestic and international employers.
