Rochester-Toronto Ferry Idea Resurfaces

 Wednesday, July 20, 2011

Several years ago, the notion of a ferry connecting Rochester and Toronto via Lake Ontario was thought to be a good idea. It lasted about a year before it went aground and cost millions of dollars in taxpayer funds.

Now, a Rochester businessman with a familiar name in that city is trying to restart the ferry service.

The Rochester Democrat & Chronicle reports Harper Sibley is looking for investors with the plans to have a passenger-only ferry operational in May 2012.

“We have to do it right this time,” said Sibley. “The city can’t afford for us not to do it right.”

The paper notes Sibley’s ancestors founded Western Union and he is the managing director of a resort in the Bahamas.
