Buffalo Private-Sector Job Count Rises

The Buffalo area's private-sector job count jumped 1,600, or 0.4 percent, in August compared to a year ago while the unemployment rate fell in the same period.
The figures are in the monthly report from the state Department of Labor.
While the private sector showed an increase, nonfarm jobs (public and private sector combined) declined by 900, or 0.2 percent year-over-year.
The jobless rate for the Buffalo-Niagara metropolitan area was 7.6 percent compared to 8.0 percent in August 2009.
Among other Upstate New York metros, Rochester lost 1,600 private-sector jobs, or 0.4 percent and 4,400 nonfarm positions, or 0.9 percent, in the past year. Syracuse gained 1,200 jobs, or 0.5 percent, in the private sector and added 600 jobs, or 0.2 percent, in the nonfarm workforce.
Over, the labor department said New York state picked up 2,500 private-sector jobs, growing by less than 0.1 percent, in August. The total nonfarm job count in New York decreased by 2,300, less than 0.1 percent.
The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 8.3 percent — below the 9.6 percent rate nationwide. The number of unemployed New Yorkers grew to 801,400 in August from 796,000 in July. The statewide labor force rose by 500 over this period.
