Just weeks after reporting positive results in a human safety study, Cleveland BioLabs Inc. announced its radiation treatment drug has received a notice of grant of patent from the State Intellectual Property Office of the People’s Republic of China.

According to a company news release, allowed claims cover the method of protecting a mammal from radiation using certain proteins and their derivatives, including CBLB502.

The Buffalo-based company (NASDAQ: CBLI) is continuing to developing the drug here in the U.S., and received fast track status from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration this summer. CBLB502 is designed to reduce the risk of death following total body irradiation during or after radiation disaster. There is currently no FDA approved medical countermeasure to reduce the risk of death following a lethal dose of total body irradiation.

The patent is the second major development in China for Cleveland BioLabs: A year ago, the company entered into a licensing agreement for its CBLB612 with Zhejiang Hisun Pharmaceutical Co. (Hisun), a leading pharmaceutical manufacturer in the People’s Republic of China. The compound has been used successfully to treat mice and non-human primates for radiation-induced bone marrow stem cell deficiencies.

In recent months, the company has also received patent approvals for other drugs under development in other parts of the world, including South Africa and the Eurasian Patent Organization (EAPO), which includes the Russian Federation and eight other member countries.
