Fredonia State College announced this week that a national wind energy company will locate its regional office at the college’s technology incubator.

Virginia-based Apex Offshore Wind LLC will become the 10th tenant to join the facility. It is also the first tenant to join that is not a start-up business.

“We are delighted to be opening our Dunkirk office in the SUNY Fredonia technology incubator,” Apex President Timothy Ryan said in a release. “Our office is strategically located near the Dunkirk Harbor, which we hope will become a hub for new business development among companies interested in participating in the wind energy supply chain.”

Apex was formed in 2008 by a management team with wind energy experience dating back to 2000, according to its Web site. It has completed more than $1 billion in wind power projects in New York, Colorado, Kansas, Texas, Wyoming and the Netherlands. Locally, members of its management team were involved with the Steel Winds project at the former Bethlehem Steel site.

Fredonia’s $6 million incubator opened in December to provide support and shared services to as many as 30 technology companies committed to staying in Western New York. It mainly attracts start-up businesses, but it temporarily opened its doors to Meals of Wheels and Chautauqua Works, Fredonia spokesperson Michael Barone said. It may make exceptions to its start-up criteria when necessary, he said.

“Ultimately, it’s a facility designed to stimulate economic development in the region and that does come in many different forms,” Barone said. “(Apex) is still a fairly young organization, having spun off (from) another entity just a couple of years ago.”
