Online Jobs ads Rise in WNY

Wednesday, June 30, 2010

The number of jobs available via online advertising has surged in Western New York compared to a year ago.

Vacancies for the Buffalo and Rochester markets were up 24.9 percent and 42.9 percent, respectively, in June from 2009 levels, according to The Conference Board Help Wanted OnLine Data Series released Wednesday.

There were 17,400 postings online in Buffalo this month, up from 13,900 last year. Rochester had 14,200 openings, up from 10,000 in June 2009.

New ads in Buffalo rose 18.5 percent to 10,500 from 9,200. In Rochester there were 8,700 new job listings, a 32.1 percent increase from 6,600 last year.

Nationally, online advertised vacancies inched up by 19,600 in June to 4.15 million following a small decline in May, the new York-based Conference Board said. The gap between the number of unemployed and advertised vacancies (supply/demand rate) stood at 3.62 unemployed for every advertised vacancy in May (the last available unemployment data) but is down from 4.73 in October 2009.

“In the last two months, labor demand has been little changed following a strong start for Spring hiring in April,” said June Shelp, vice president at The Conference Board.

She added job demand has been uneven across geographies and occupations, and weakness in the housing market is one factor.
