BERARDI IMMIGRATION LAW

U.S. TIGHTENS SECURITY MEASURES FOR SOME TRAVELERS – RELAXES SECURITY MEASURES FOR OTHERS

Stronger Focus on Citizens of/Travelers through 14 Countries

Visitors to the United States who carry passports from one of the 14 countries identified, or whose travel originates in, or passes through, one of those countries will be subject to increased security screenings at airports worldwide, according to an unnamed Transportation Security Administration source.

Countries identified for increased screenings include:
• Pakistan
• Saudi Arabia
• Nigeria
• Cuba
• Iran
• Sudan
• Syria
• Afghanistan
• Algeria
• Lebanon
• Libya
• Iraq
• Somalia
• Yemen

Increased screening measures may include full-body pat-downs, more thorough scrutiny of carry-on bags, the use of whole-body scanners that can look beneath clothing for hidden explosives or weapons and/or the use of a device that can identify even tiny traces of explosives.

Some Relaxing of Screening Procedures for U.S. Citizens

In the aftermath of the December 25 attempted bombing of a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit, all travelers were subject heightened security procedures resulting in long wait times at airports.  However, TSA officials expect an easing of many of those restrictions for U.S. citizens and most others NOT flying through the 14 nations identified above.
