Strong Job Market Rankings Highlight July

"Buffalo Niagara gets major boost in jobs" was the huge headline in July as four companies announced plans to hire as many 650 people across the region.  The new jobs include:

Local Edge - formerly known as the Talking Phone Book, the company hopes to fill 150 new on-line media consulting jobs at their Amherst facility by the end of the year.  Aggressive growth plans for this back office industry company project as many as 250 to 500 new jobs by 2015.

OncoMed Pharmaceuticals - this Long Island based life sciences company will occupy 4,500 square feet in the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus' Innovation Center.   They will start this September with 12 pharmacists and administrative employees and expect to have 45 full-time staff by year end.

E-One New York - a BNE partner project win with our colleagues at the Hamburg Industrial Development Agency, E-One has hired 15 people and plans to add 10 more as they revive building fire trucks at the former American LaFrance facility on Camp Road in the Town of Hamburg.

Walmart - the retail giant announced they have started hiring between 350 - 400 people for its new Lancaster store on Transit Road which will open this September.  The company has opened a temporary hiring center to assist in processing the volume of applications.

At the same time these new job opportunities were being announced, a Bloomberg.com ranking listed Buffalo Niagara as the
7th Strongest Job Market in the country.  An unemployment rate below the national average, 25% of companies across the region planning to hire in the third quarter and a 25% increase in online ads for jobs all contribute to the high ranking.  Click here to see the rest of the communities who made the list.
