2Q Median Home Prices Rise 5.2% in Buffalo
Aug-31-2010 — The Buffalo Niagara housing market fared well in the second quarter as median-price increases outpaced other Upstate New York metro areas. The National Association of Realtors said a nationwide trend in firming home prices solidified in the period with more cities showing increases from a year ago. The gains, the trade group said, were aided by a surge in sales driven by the 8,000 home-buyer tax credit which has since expired.
Grape Growers Anticipate Big Harvest
Aug-31-2010 — This looks like a banner year for grape producers in New York, according to the latest federal forecast. The state’s producers, who are concentrated in Western New York and in the Finger Lakes, are expected to harvest 170,000 tons of grapes, based on the report from the National Agricultural Statistics Service. That’s up 28 percent from 133,000 tons a year ago.
Tourism Looking up in Niagara Falls
Aug-31-2010 — Two independent reports offer hints that the summer of 2010 may be one of the strongest for Niagara County tourism in recent memory. The Niagara Tourism & Convention Corp. reported that online reservation bookings increased 100 percent in June and July. Cott Wraps $500M Cliffstar Deal
Aug-31-2010 — Toronto’s Cott Corp. has closed on its purchase of Dunkirk-based Cliffstar Corp. The publicly traded Cott in July reached an agreement to purchase the beverage-maker Cliffstar for $500 million cash. The deal was completed Tuesday.

New Light on Forces That Drive Breast Cancer
Aug-27-2010 — Newly published research from Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) describes, for the first time, how the tumor-suppressing functions of the protein p53 become weakened by a hormone receptor in breast cancer cells and mammary stem cells. According to principal investigator Gokul M. Das, PhD, Co- Director of the Breast Disease Site Research Group at RPCI, the culprit is estrogen receptor (ER).
Noted researchers join Kelly institute
Aug-27-2010 — Lawrence Wrabetz, head of the myelin biology unit at San Raffaele Scientific Institute in Milan, Italy, has been appointed director of the Hunter James Kelly Research Institute (HJKRI) at UB. Laura Feltri, who heads the neuroglia unit at the Italian institute and is Wrabetz’s spouse, also has been recruited to the HJKRI, which was established in 2004 by UB and the Hunter’s Hope Foundation. Wrabetz and Feltri will begin transitioning their laboratories to Buffalo this fall.
Spaulding Fibre Project Complete
Aug-27-2010 — Demolition and cleanup of one of the largest industrial sites in Erie County, Spaulding Fibre in the City of Tonawanda, is complete. The $18.9 million project, achieved through funding from local, state and federal sources, left the site of the once-sprawling factory ready for redevelopment. “The old, abandoned buildings have been demolished and environmental remediation substantially completed, clearing the way for this 47-acre parcel to return to productive use,” Assemblyman Robin Schi

Aug-19-2010 — Area business developers and realtors have teamed up to offer a new online commercial listing system for the Buffalo Niagara region. SKF Expands Falconer Operation
Aug-19-2010 — SKF Aeroengine North America is starting construction on a heat-treating facility in Falconer, an $18 million investment expected to protect 691 jobs in the Jamestown area. The Chautauqua County company makes ball and roller bearings used in helicopters and jet engines.

Companies Get Grants to Create 45 Jobs
Aug-17-2010 — Two area companies planning to add a total of 45 jobs were awarded grants of $100,000 each by Empire State Development Corp. to support their growth plans. Empire State Development, the state’s economic development arm, approved grants for StudentVoice LLC in Buffalo and Inscape in Falconer. Program Seeks Energy-Efficient Hospitals
