Young Investigator Award From Prostate Cancer Foundation
May-04-2010 — Hannelore Heemers, PhD, a researcher in the Department of Urology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, is the recipient of one of 21 Young Investigator Awards given by the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF). Designed to encourage the most innovative minds in cancer research to focus their careers on prostate cancer, the $225,000 grant awards provide recipients with three years of funding to test transformational research questions for prostate cancer patients.
UB Cleared for Biomed Engineering
May-04-2010 — UB announced that it has received approval for the program from the state Department of Education. The approval means UB can now actively advertise the degree and recruit students and faculty to the program.
National Grid Grant for Biomedics at UB
May-04-2010 — National Grid and the University at Buffalo announced Friday that the utility company is giving $250,000 to enhance a computerized communications network that will link the school’s multiple campuses with each other and with biomedical companies around Western New York.
CTG profit rises on health-care revenue
May-04-2010 — CTG reported a 37 percent gain in first-quarter profit as the IT company’s health-care revenue continues to improve. The Buffalo-based company said net income for the period was $1.8 million compared to $1.3 million a year ago. Earnings per share rose to 11 cents from 9 in the 2009 first quarter.
Cleveland Biolabs opens new venture
May-04-2010 — Nearly a year after forming a joint venture with a Russian-based venture capital fund, Cleveland BioLabs Inc. has announced the launch of an entity to develop anticancer therapies. The Buffalo drug development firm (NASDAQ: CBLI) opened the U.S. office of Incuron LLC, a joint venture between CBLI and Bioprocess Capital Ventures LLC, the Russian firm. The launch triggers the first $5.7 million investment into Incuron.
GM Plant Expects to Add 415 Jobs
Apr-29-2010 — General Motors' Town of Tonawanda engine plant plans to add 415 jobs and retain 300 others as a result of winning a new V-8 engine line, Gov. David A. Paterson said Tuesday. Production of the "Generation V" engine — representing a $400 million investment by GM — is set to begin in 2012. It could bring the total job count to near 1,200, welcome news for a plant that last year was nervous about its future amid job cuts, the phaseout of two engines and GM's bankruptcy.

Cummins Recalls 140 Laid Off at Local Plant
Apr-23-2010 — Cummins Inc. is making progress in bringing back workers from temporary layoff at its production plant in Jamestown. About 140 of the 440 employees who took voluntary leave from the plant earlier this year have returned, said Mark Land, a spokesman for Columbus, Ind.-based Cummins. An additional 30 workers will come back by May 1.

Roswell Park Researcher Awarded Grant
Apr-22-2010 — Eugene Yu, PhD, of the Cancer Genetics Department at Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI), has received a grant for $250,000 from The Children’s Guild Foundation of Buffalo to identify the causative genes for Down syndrome-associated mental retardation. The grant would be used to establish The Children’s Guild Foundation Down Syndrome Research Program at RPCI.
Roswell Park Designated a Center of Excellence Network for Adult BMT Transplantation
Apr-22-2010 — OptumHealth Care Solutions, one of the nation’s largest health and wellness companies, recognized Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) as a designated member of the OptumHealth Centers of Excellence network in the area of adult bone marrow transplantation. The Centers of Excellence network was created to provide patients with the assurance they are receiving treatment from a medical center and physicians who are committed to standards of excellence.
Business Park Planned for Genesee County
Apr-16-2010 — The Genesee County Economic Development Center has been working on plans to build a 1,300-acre business park in the town of Alabama. This site in Genesee County is where Yahoo was considering building their data center before deciding on Lockport in Erie County. Currently, STAMP is in phase two of four phases. Hyde said the cost for phase two is $1.35 million.
Trocaire Adds Human Resource Studies
Apr-13-2010 — Trocaire College plans to offer a new evening program in human resource management. Starting in fall 2010, students can earn a certificate or associate degree in the field. It is the second new program announced recently by the college, which announced over the winter that it will offer its first four-year degree next fall.

Top 100 Markets Lose Jobs in Past Year
Apr-09-2010 — The nation’s 100 biggest labor markets all have fewer private-sector jobs now than they did a year ago, according to figures released Wednesday morning by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. But 13 markets -- Buffalo among them -- experienced relatively mild declines of less than 2 percent between February 2009 and the same month this year.

Apr-01-2010 — As midsized cities go, the Buffalo Niagara region is a pretty inexpensive place to do business, a study released Tuesday found. Thanks to low transportation expenses and competitive labor rates, the Buffalo Niagara region finished third among 12 U.S. metro areas in a ranking of cities with between 1 million and 2 million people by accounting firm KPMG.
