Foreign Trade Consulates Visit Buffalo Niagara

On April 29th and 30th the Buffalo Niagara region played host to the largest foreign trade mission in New York State history.  By the accounts of all participants and organizers, it was a resounding success.  Sixty-three foreign trade consuls from thirty-seven different countries started their two day journey on Wednesday morning in the Common Council Chambers of Buffalo City Hall where they were welcomed by Mayor Byron Brown, New York State Assemblyman Robin Schimminger Chautauqua County Executive Greg Edwards, Empire State Development Corporation President Marisa Lago and me.  Their whirlwind tour ended with a reception at the Top of the Falls Restaurant in Niagara Falls with a gorgeous view looking out over the American falls.

In between these events they participated in panel discussions in life sciences, advanced manufacturing and renewable energy.  Panelists included local business leaders, researchers, academicians and economic development professionals who discussed everything from regional assets to potential incentives to quality of life issues and what it's like doing business in the Buffalo Niagara region.

Wednesday evening was capped off by a networking reception and dinner where our visiting dignitaries were introduced to Governor David Paterson.  The Governor addressed the gathering along with Ontario Provincial Minister of International Trade and Investment, Sandra Pupatello.

The most accurate barometer of success was the testimonials of the trade consuls themselves:

Kristina Garcia, Managing Director, German State of Hessen, U.S. Office for Economic Development - "This is my first time in Buffalo and it's very different from Manhattan - but different in a good way!  It has beautiful architecture and the ease of travel is a very nice change."

Mitchell Lee, Consulate of Singapore - "The workshops have been very well organized and the information very well presented.  I am learning a lot about the region and am very impressed with and interested in the area's commitment to renewable energy.  I look forward to coming back again soon on my own to explore more business opportunities."
