Business First of Buffalo - by James Fink
A Grand Island pharmaceuticals manufacturer is working on plans to expand its plant by more than 10,000-square-feet.
Life Technologies Inc. has filed an application with the Erie County Industrial Development Agency to seek an incentive package that will help the firm finance an $8 million expansion of its plant. The ECIDA will hold a public hearing on the proposed expansion on April 17 and its board of directors will likely vote on the package on April 20 during its monthly meeting.
“This is a company that has grown and we’ve seen it go through a number of evolutions — all good,” said John Cappellino, ECIDA director of business development.
Life Technologies, which manufactures a number of medical and pharmaceutical products, is proposing to renovate 2,300-square-feet of existing lab space while adding 10,300-square-feet in new lab and manufacturing space to its Staley Road operations. The company has more than 100,000-square-feet of space and 476 workers at the plant.
It remains undetermined if the expansion will result in any new jobs being created.
“It does help to retain the 476 people who work there,” Cappellino said. “Life Technologies continues to be a success story for the region.”
