Buffalo-Niagara Region Gets Recognized Nationally

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the All-American City Award given by the National Civic League. The event will take place today, June 17th, through the19th, in Tampa, Florida. The honor is given to ten winners each year for their outstanding ability to create jobs, revitalize their downtown and reduce crime. To be chosen as a finalist, cities need to complete an application noting at least three examples of community-based projects that address local challenges.
The National Civic League invites all previous winners back to join the conference this year, and as a two-time winner, the Buffalo-Niagara Region will be attending. Our community wasn't able to become a finalist this year, however the region will still be honored on a national stage. Delegates have been sent to accept the honor and share the story of the positive things that are occurring within the city. The delegates are from both Erie and Niagara county. For an example, Elmwood Village's own Bill Proto will be attending to illustrate the Elmwood experience.
Although our region is not a finalist this year, it is important to understand that it is difficult to achieve such a prestigious award every year. It is an honor to still be recognized as a previous winner and as a great city. While in Tampa, the chosen delegates will be learning of new ways to help make the region better. It is a great chances to discover new strategies of problem solving and of prosperity; there is always room for improvement no matter what.
As a community, we should strive to become a finalist every year. The region has the potential to do so, and we have so much to offer that other cities can't. So it may just be a little award that may not mean much to many, however it is a symbol of the many things that make up this great City of Buffalo.
