Canada buys in Buffalo

The Canadian government plunked down $320,000 last Tuesday to buy a single-family home in the Elmwood Village area, to be used for one of its foreign service staff.

The government, through its consulate here, bought the home at 205 Cleveland Avenue from Michael J. Bonilla, according to Erie County Clerk records.

Canada already owns several properties in the area to house its staff, but this is its first acquisition in the trendy area along Elmwood Avenue, said consulate spokeswoman Kerry Mitchell. The consulate is located at HSBC Center downtown.

“We have Canadian foreign service who come into town on regular rotations,” she said. “They come to live in what would be considered Crown properties. This is a new acquisition for that purpose.”

Besides the new property, the consulate and Canada also own 235 Lakefront Blvd. and 207 Portside Dr. in Buffalo, as well as 19 Fox Chase Court and 71 South Rockingham Way in Amherst. Several other properties were sold in recent years.
