Business First of Buffalo - by Allissa Kline

Medaille College said it is now offering a bachelor’s degree in biology education at the middle and high school level.

Approved this fall by the state Education Department, the Education in Adolescent Teaching: Biology 7-12 program will be available next fall at Medaille’s Buffalo campus. The college has already begin recruiting students for the degree program, which also offers dual certification in special education.

The college hopes to fill a gap by training new math and science teachers, which are in short supply nationally, statewide and locally, Illana Lane, the acting dean of the School of Education, said in a release. In addition, students who enroll in the program could receive the federal TEACH grant, which gives up to $16,000 to undergraduate students and $8,000 to graduate students, Lane said.

More than 200 students are currently enrolled in Medaille’s School of Education undergraduate programs. Bachelor’s degrees are already available for Adolescent Teaching programs such as English, math and social studies.
