GO Transit eyes Niagara Falls extension

GO Transit is launching an environmental assessment to determine necessary infrastructure upgrades to expand rail service to Ontario’s Niagara peninsula. The agency expects to complete the assessment in summer 2010.

Potential infrastructure improvements include building stations and upgrading an existing line. The Niagara service expansion is outlined in GO Transit’s “GO 2020” strategic plan.

“The potential service expansion along the Niagara corridor will depend on various factors, such as fleet availability, capital and operating funds, and supportive business partnerships with the railways,” said GO Transit Managing Director Gary McNeil in a prepared statement.

This past summer, GO Transit offered a weekend excursion train linking Niagara Falls and Toronto.
